On January 10, 2026, Sierrans for Alabama secured a crucial victory for our state’s environment! Our endorsed candidates, Emily Northrop and Michael Mullen, have been elected to the Alabama Chapter Executive Committee.
Emily Northrop brings over a decade of climate advocacy. She also founded Sun Day BHam! as part of a national effort promoting clean energy.
Michael Mullen has decades of leadership experience in the Alabama environmental movement, renowned as the founder and tireless leader of the Choctawhatchee Riverkeeper.
Both are dedicated to building a more inclusive, transparent, and advocacy oriented Sierra Club in Alabama. We also look forward to working with other newly elected leaders, Ida Gleaton and Kyle Crider, to advance our shared environmental goals.
Our Campaign is Already Delivering Results.
Because of our collective advocacy, the Alabama Chapter has taken its first steps toward greater transparency. Chapter leadership has posted a chapter-wide contact email and is hosting a membership meeting on January 17, 2026. Both are victories for member access. Leadership has also signaled new openness to campaigns for clean energy and against harmful data centers.
But Our Work is Far From Over.
True change requires more than initial steps. The Alabama Chapter continues to violate Sierra Club policy by holding most group and committee meetings in secret, shutting members out of planning and setting priorities. Committees remain exclusive, hosting presentations instead of participatory meetings, while clear contact information for most groups and committees is still being withheld.
Join Us.
This victory proves that change is possible. To transform the Sierra Club into a powerful advocate for Alabama’s environment, we must continue building off this momentum.
