Strengthening the Alabama Chapter of the Sierra Club
Petition to Convene a General Membership Meeting
Dear Members of the Executive Committee of the Alabama Chapter of the Sierra Club,
We, the undersigned Sierra Club members in good standing, respectfully request that the Executive Committee of the Alabama Chapter of the Sierra Club convene a membership meeting pursuant to Bylaw 2.2 of the Sierra Club Alabama Chapter Bylaws. This request is made with the goal of fostering greater transparency, engagement, and collaboration within the Chapter, and to address opportunities for growth and improvement in our collective efforts to advance the Sierra Club’s mission.
The proposed agenda for the membership meeting includes the following items:
1. Open Meetings: A discussion on how to ensure that meetings of the Executive Committee, Groups, and other Chapter Committees are accessible and inclusive for all members, in alignment with the Sierra Club’s commitment to open and participatory governance.
2. Open Communications: An exploration of ways to improve communication within the Chapter, including making contact information for leadership more readily available to members and allies, to facilitate better engagement and collaboration.
3. Volunteer Outreach: A discussion of strategies to enhance volunteer recruitment, retention, and leadership development, with a focus on cultivating the next generation of leaders and fostering greater diversity and inclusion within the Chapter.
4. Open and Active Committees: Review of the status and activity levels of Chapter Committees, including the Political Committee, to identify opportunities to strengthen and expand their efforts and membership in alignment with Sierra Club’s mission to advocate for environmental protection.
5. Active Campaigns: A discussion of the Chapter’s current and future campaigns, including opportunities to take positions on critical environmental issues such as Climate Change, water pollution, habitat conservation, and environmental justice.
6. Democratic Values: A conversation about ways to further strengthen the Chapter’s commitment to democratic principles, including competitive elections, term limits, and opportunities to enhance member participation in decision-making.
7. Minimum Chapter Staffing: An exploration of the Chapter’s efforts to fulfill Sierra Club’s mandate for minimum chapter staffing necessary to fulfill the Sierra Club’s mission which includes influencing state policies, politics, and regulatory activities.
These agenda items are proposed with the goal of fostering open dialogue and ensuring that the Chapter thrives as a leader in environmental advocacy. A membership meeting will provide an opportunity for members to work together for the betterment of the Chapter and the environmental movement in Alabama.
Thank you in advance for honoring this petition. We look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
